Church History

By establishing two branch churches in Thirumulaivoyal and TR Palayam, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church has grown its ministry over the years. Since then, Thirumulaivoyal has developed into an independently functioning IELC church.

Meanwhile, the TR Palayam, St.Mark Lutheran church continues to operate under the guidance and support of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. This expansion reflects the commitment of GSLC to spread the message of faith and service, ensuring that the light of the Gospel shines brightly in these communities

Significant enhancements were made to the church facilities including construction of a parsonage, erection of surrounding walls creating a welcoming environment for the congregation

1985

TThe Church celebrated the laying of the foundation stone, which marked the start of the construction of its edifice, on February 11, 1973. The church structure was officially opened on June 23, 1974, following a year and a half of diligence.

A significant turning point for GSLC was reached in 1966 when Reverend Steinhoff, the pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at the time, secured the land for the church's permanent location.

A plot of land on Brick Kiln Road in Purasaiwakkam was purchased in 1936 specifically for the purpose of creating a cemetery for the church. This purchase was a significant turning point in the church's history and guaranteed a hallowed area for its members to pay tribute to and remember their departed loved ones for many years to come.

The believers and missionaries organised the church service and solemn celebration of communion, which took place at Vepery, Purasaiwakkam, on December 26, 1924.

Serving Through the Ages

We have our regular services during Sundays. 7 AM we have our English service were GSLC is the only congregation in Chennai circle to have English service. Followed by 9 AM we have Tamil service and evening 6:30 we have an evening worship service. During the 1st and 3rd sunday of the month the holy commuion is served in all the three service. Also on the 1st day of the month.

The active involvement of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church's numerous committees, each of which is essential to the congregation's overall health and spiritual development, strengthens the church. With the goal of assisting young churchgoers in their spiritual development, the Youth Fellowship offers a nurturing environment for fellowship activities, leadership training, and spiritual education that fosters a strong feeling of community.

A cornerstone of the church's educational ministry, the Sunday School aims to help youngsters develop their comprehension of God's word by teaching them biblical information. In the meanwhile, the Women's Fellowship is a thriving organisation that strengthens women's faith via encouraging discipleship, support among members, and service to the church and community at large.

A prayer cell is a committed group of churchgoers who gather together on a regular basis to pray for others and pursue spiritual development. It provides a safe space for participants to discuss their beliefs, consider the Bible, and encourage one another in prayer. The Prayer Cell prays for God's direction, blessings, and healing for the church, the community, and beyond through group prayer.Through its distinct ministries, each committee supports the general well-being of the church, guaranteeing that Good Shepherd Lutheran Church continues to be a congregation that is inclusive, service-oriented, and spiritually active.

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church is a monument to steadfast faith and community development as it approaches its centenary. The church has not only survived but thrived over the past century, and it currently serves a congregation of around 600 people with pride. This milestone demonstrates the church's ongoing commitment to its purpose, which has attracted many people to its fold via its outreach of compassion, unity, and service. In addition to being a historical milestone, the centenary also serves as a living testament to religion in action, opening the door for future generations to continue its revered customs.
